Typhoon to open on a record 513 screens

Typhoon, a blockbuster action film directed by _Kwak_Gyeong-taek of Friend fame, is set to open on 513 screens on December 14, according to its distributor CJ Entertainment.

This is the same number of screens on which box office record holder Taegukgi opened in February 2004. For this year to date, the largest release has been melodrama You are my Sunshine on 450 screens.

Typhoon will also benefit from the largest marketing budget in Korean film history. Including the cost of striking prints, 4 billion won (~$4 million) will be spent on p&a (print and advertising) costs, including a special "world premiere" that will be held on December 5, with over 800 VIP guests from Korea and abroad in attendance.

Typhoon ranks as the most expensive Korean film ever with a production budget of 15 billion won (~$15 million). The film tells the story of a modern-day pirate who has been betrayed by both North and South Korea, and who sets out to take revenge. Shooting for the film took place in Busan, Thailand, and Vladivostok in Russia.

The film will also open on the same day as Peter Jackson's highly anticipated King Kong, making for an epic struggle at the box office.
